The Who

I wasn’t as much of a fan of the Who in the 60’s as I was the Beatles or Stones, but they gradually pulled me into the fold, and I loved ‘Tommy’, ‘Live at Leeds’, etc.

I moved to San Francisco in Sept 1973, and very shortly afterwards, Quadrophenia was released. They began the Quadrophenia tour right here in San Francisco at the Cow Palace, and it was my first Who concert.

I took some photos there, but I don’t remember a lot of details except that somebody had given a bunch of pills to Keith Moon, who obligingly took them all, and about halfway through the show, he just passed out on his drumset. Pete managed to rouse him, and he managed another few minutes before he was down again and had to be taken backstage. Pete asked if anybody in the audience was a drummer, and some brave guy went up there and played the rest of the set (they just did some blues standards at that point) with them. I can imagine the story he had to tell to his friends after the show.

A few years later, they played at Winterland, which at 5500 capacity, was a pretty small venue for the Who. I took some other of these pictures at one of those shows.

Though I don’t have any photos, I also saw ‘Who’s Dead’ at Oakland Stadium, with the Who and the Grateful Dead, and another show at Oakland Stadium with the Who and the Clash.

While I still love the older records, I stopped following them after John and Moonie were gone.
