Pink Floyd

Where do I begin? I was on board with Pink Floyd from the first time I'd heard 'Ummagumma' not long after release.

My first Floyd show was in April of 1972 at the Spectrum Theater (half the Spectrum was closed off - Pink Floyd were not that popular to fill it up yet) in Philadelphia. My friends and I came down from college in Rochester to stay with a friend of our’s whose parents lived outside of Philly and to go to the show.

They started the first set with ‘Echoes’, and we were off! Brilliant performances. Then they took a break and performed what was listed on the free program as ‘Eclipse: A Piece For Assorted Lunatics” (there was some issue with the 'Dark Side Of The Moon' title), and yes, these were early versions of these songs - some pieces of music on there were completely different from what appeared on the album.

I saw them in ’73 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD after DSOTM, and my first show of their’s after I came to San Francisco was at the Cow Palace in 1975. They did 2 sets, the first being stuff from ‘Wish You Were Here’ and other faves, and the 2nd set was composed of early versions of songs that later came out as ‘Animals’. ‘Dogs’ was called ‘You Gotta Be Crazy’, and ‘Sheep’ was called ‘Raving and Drooling’, among other things, and these versions were again quite different from what was later released.

Unlike the other gigs, I DID take my camera to this show and muscled my way up to the front to get these shots.

I lost interest in Pink Floyd after Roger left, but continued to follow Roger and his first few solo albums and tours.
