The Clash

I was not a big Clash fan right from the beginning, and that 'only band that matters' nonsensical hype put me off them, too. I liked punk a lot, but that classic first album of their's just didn't do it for me at the time; I liked them a lot better when they started expanding their musical directions with 'Give Em Enough Rope' and of course 'London Calling'.

I took these photos when the Clash played at the ‘Tribal Stomp’ at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in Monterey, CA, along with other artists like Clash favorite, Joe Ely.

This concert was a few weeks before ‘London Calling’ was released in 1979, so they were playing a few new numbers from it that we’d not heard before. One new one that I particularly liked on first hearing was ‘Guns of Brixton’, still one of my favorite Clash songs, and I was so delighted to hear it on ‘London Calling’!
