Robin Trower
I always liked Robin’s work with Procol Harum, who I was a huge fan of. His first solo album, ‘Twice Removed From Yesterday’ came out while I was in college, and became very popular very quickly.
After I moved to San Francisco, I went to a show at Winterland, which I believe had Golden Earring opening, then Robin Trower, then Sha-Na-Na headlining. An unfortunate billing for Sha-Na-Na. Trower was touring ‘Bridge of Sighs’, and this was his first time in SF.
To cut a long story short, the crowd went berserk - they called him out for THREE encores, and they would have happily had him play all the rest of the night. Sha-Na-Na played to a rather small crowd.
So he was King Robin of San Francisco for awhile and played a number of headlining shows. These pictures were taken at a ‘Day On The Green’ which were mini-festivals put on at Oakland Stadium, capacity about 60,000, by Bill Graham. The theme for this one was 'The British Are Coming', and Robin headlined over the likes of Fleetwood Mac and Peter Frampton. I don't know how many stadium shows Robin headlined, but I wouldn't think it was many.
