Dead Kennedys
In early 1979, I was living in a flat in the Mission District of San Francisco that I shared with a couple of other fellows. One of them, Al, had come to us from Boulder, CO. One day Al asked us if this friend of his from Boulder could crash at our place for awhile as he wanted to relocate to San Francisco.
We were good with that, so one day Eric came by - a really nice, intelligent guy with some very eclectic tastes in music,as did the rest of us, so that worked well.
One day he said something to the effect of ‘I want to be in a punk band, and I’m going to call myself ‘Occupant’. Eventually, punk band ended up being Dead Kennedys and Occupant evolved into Jello Biafra. He was with us for a few weeks after he got that going.
I was at the very first Dead Kennedys show, at the Mabuhay Gardens punk club - they were the second in a 4-band show and I remember Jello spending more time in the pogo pit than he did on the stage!
