Genesis

I was a fan of progressive rock since I first heard those mellotrons on King Crimson’s ‘Court Of The Crimson King’ in 1969. But otherwise, didn’t hear that much prog until they started playing Genesis ‘Nursery Cryme’ songs on WCMF in Rochester, NY, where I was going to college. Genesis quickly became my all-time favorite band from about 1973 to 1983.

I was working at a record shop in 1974 and when I got home, my flat-mate in San Francisco told me that they’d just played a new Genesis double-album and he recorded it on his reel-to-reel. I got my headphones, plugged ‘em in, and took it all in for the next hour or so - my goodness, what a work was 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway'!!

Even after Peter Gabriel left, I still loved the music they made; after all, even with Peter, most of the music was written by keyboardist Tony Banks.

I saw them on the ‘Trick of the Tail’ tour in 1976 in Berkeley; later that year, went on my first visit to Britain; spent most of the time in London, but did take the train from London to Glasgow to see Genesis at Glasgow Apollo; right after the show, took the train right back to London! My friends over there thought I was mad, but we’re used to longer distances here than they are, and it was a nice train ride.
