The Nuns

The Nuns were the first local punk band I ever saw here in San Francisco. I was late 1976 and a Filipino supper club called the Mabuhay Gardens started putting on punk rock shows there on Wednesday and Thursday nights (later it became a punk venue every night). I went with some friends to check this scene out, and the bands playing were the Nuns and the Dils. And I liked what I heard.

These photos were taken when the Nuns opened the show at Winterland in San Francisco in January of 1978, for the Sex Pistols’ last show with Sid Vicious. An even better SF punk band, the Avengers, were second on the bill.

Whereas my favorite SF punk band, the Mutants, had 1 guy and 2 women singers, the Nuns had 2 guys and 1 woman singer, Jennifer Miro, who had a very ’Nico’ vibe to her.

Interesting of note is that Alejandro Escovito, who later got rather well known as he is such an excellent musician and songwriter and released so much music, was bass player with the Nuns back then.
